English

The aim of this study is to identify and explain the factors influencing the merger of firms operating in the private auditing profession in Iran. This research adopts a mixed-methods approach. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with professional and academic experts during 2024 and 2025 to identify, extract, and categorize the factors affecting mergers. In the quantitative phase, a questionnaire survey was conducted, and the collected data were analyzed to assess the relative importance and impact of the identified factors. The findings indicate that a range of structural, legal and regulatory, behavioral, cultural, and environmental factors influence the formation and success of mergers among audit firms. Among these factors, conflicts of interest among partners, the characteristics of the professional services market structure, legal gaps, and weaknesses in regulatory mechanisms were identified as the most significant factors affecting the merger process. In addition, cultural and environmental factors, risk management practices, and the quality of information exchange among firms play a significant role in determining the success or failure of mergers. Based on the findings, strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks, enhancing information transparency, and developing effective mechanisms for managing conflicts of interest can provide an appropriate foundation for facilitating mergers among audit firms and improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the auditing profession in Iran. The findings of this study can be useful for professional policymakers, regulatory bodies, and audit firm managers in developing effective policies and strategies for facilitating mergers and promoting the development of the professional structure of the auditing profession.
