Abstract
Open innovation appropriability is an important and vital challenge for food and pharmaceutical firms that are lurking in the face of competitors. In the industry value chain, these firms collaborate with a network of partners in their eco-system. The collaboration of partners in open innovation context may lead to the creation and acquisition of the value by deploying appropriability mechanisms. This article seeks to explain the appropriability model of open innovation in the value chain of the food and pharmaceutical firms. The methodology deployed is the mixed method and the main sources of data are semi-structured interviews with experts as well as survey in food and pharmaceutical firms. Deploying the qualitative techniques of literature review, all the main and sub-variables were identified and then localized with the Delphi technique. Structural equation technique has been used to reveal structural correlations between the variables in quantitative section. Findings show that the priority of pharmaceutical firms in deploying appropriability is formal mechanisms. However, in food firms, the priority is given to informal mechanisms. In open innovation collaborations, food and pharmaceutical firms are in search for value acquisition and profitable exploitations. The open collaboration in width is mostly practiced with the priority of effectiveness.
